What Season Tent Do You Need?

>

The most important thing about tents is how well they keep you protected from rain, wind and any other conditions you might face. People who don’t camp often might not be sure what they need to look for when they go to find an affordable tent.  There are many different factors that affect how well your tent withstands the elements and while it might seem complicated at first glance, selecting the best tent is easier than you might think.
The first thing you need to know is that tents are categorized by how many seasons they were designed for.  “Season tents,” can be 3 season or 4 season.  One that is made for 3 seasons is meant for fall, spring and summer, not winter.  While the ones designed for four are made more durable and  are meant to hold up in harsher winter conditions.
Unfortunately, not all tents are made the same.  Even if a tent is classified this way some are better than others

A Rain fly is a separate piece of the tent material that goes up over the top of the tent and gives it an extra layer of protection like a jacket or umbrella would.  Most tents come with a rain fly but sometimes it is helpful to get a better one that is sold separately.  Make sure that yours covers your whole tent and not only parts of it.  This is crucial to helping keep the water out.
Something else that can help is a footprint, which is similar to a tarp and goes under the tent.  At first thought, it seems like the best way to prevent water from collecting under the tent is to have one that goes out further than the tent.  This is a big mistake.  The water will only pool more and slide right underneath.  The best way to set it up is to make it just slightly smaller than the actual tent floor so that water doesn’t collect and build up.

Buying a tent based on its price can ruin your entire camping experience.  Don’t buy a cheap tent just because of its price.  Make sure it will keep you protected in all conditions.
