Two Come-Back Thailand Beaches: Thong Nai Pan Beaches Worth Exploring

Thong Nai Pan means in Thai ‘bay of Pan’ because it is believed that the twin bay on the tropical island of Koh Phangan was given to a man called Pan as a reward by the King of Thailand for services rendered to the crown.

There are two main beaches in the Thong Nai Pan area – Thong Nai Pan Yai (‘big bay of Pan’) and Thong Nai Pan Noi (‘small bay of Pan’). Both of these beaches are stunning white sand places with warm turquoise water that is good for year round swimming.

The beaches are fringed with towering coconut palms and other varieties of tree. The area is scattered with massive granite boulders and behind are tree covered mountains. The whole area looks like a postcard.

For many years these two Thai beaches were relatively unknown outside of traveler’s circles. This was partly due to the bumpy and unpaved road from the main port town of Thongsala that put all but the most intrepid visitors off from visiting the area.

Things have now changed. The road has greatly improved and the beach of Thong Nai Pan Noi has re-invented itself. There are now 3 luxury hotels on the beach – 2 nestled on the rocks at either end of the beach and 1 gradually taking over the beachfront. These three hotels have invested a lot in promoting Thong Nai Pan Noi as a high end tourist destination for families, honeymooners and those looking for unspoiled nature and luxury.

At the same time, the other beach, Thong Nai Pan Yai has started to exploit its extra space and a number of swimming pools have been built. Now Dreamland Resort, Central Cottages, Havana Resort, Candlehut Resort and Starlight Resort all have pools near the beach. These places are not as luxurious as the hotels on Thong Nai Pan Noi and offer good value for those cost conscious visitors to the area.

Despite all the changes, the two beaches of Thong Nai Pan are still wondrous locations and worth visiting if you get the chance.
