Three Reasons You Need to Get a Passport to Cruise

Current United States passport requirements do not require cruise passengers traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and the Bahamas to have a passport so long as the ship starts and ends in the same American port city.

This has been welcome news to many cruisers who did not want to purchase a passport as well as to those countries mentioned above who were afraid of losing millions in tourism dollars.

Even though cruise passport guidelines do not require you to have one in many cases, here are three reasons you should consider purchasing a passport anyway.

You Miss the Ship

There are any number of reasons that could cause you to miss the ship and it may not always be in your control. Just ask the passengers who missed their cruise in San Juan last month when the ship had to set sail before the hurricane hit. Those passengers

with passports were able to catch a flight to the next port to meet the ship but any of those passengers without passports would have been forced to fly back to the United States.

It should be noted in this example, because San Juan is in a U.S. territory a passport was not needed to fly in or out of the city.

In Case of Emergency

Sometimes bad things happen, and when they do you want to be prepared. Whether you get injured hiking through the rain forest in Belize or a family emergency happens back home that requires your immediate attention, the only way you are going to be able to catch a flight back in the United States is with a passport. Passports cost less than $100 and are good for several years so there is no reason not to purchase one so that you are prepared for any scenario.

To See Amazing New Destinations
Without a passport you are limiting yourself to cruising the same locations over and over. With a passport the whole world opens up to you. Whether you want to cruise down to South America or try one of the Adriatic cruises to Italy, Slovenia and the black sand beaches of Croatia, you will be able to do them with a passport. You can even take advantage of some of the great deals on repositioning cruises.

You can typically find 14 night cruises from the east coast to Europe for less than a $1,000 but you will need a passport to fly home. Don’t limit yourself by just cruising with a drivers license, pick up an inexpensive passport and enjoy the wonders of the world.
