Heart Disease: What’s Good for Your Heart

Since heart disease is in my family history, my doctor recently advised that I go see a specialist and have a special test run to see if there was any build up of cholesterol in my arteries. Well, the doc did find some in arteries along both sides of my neck.

He told me that when he went to medical school, he was taught that once there was plague build up, there was nothing you could do about it. Fortunately that has changed. So he has me taking generic statin drugs and a hand full of vitamins. The vitamins include Fish oil, CO-Q-10, Folic Acid and for Vitamin D deficiency symptoms some vitamin D supplements. After a year, he will do the test again and hopefully it will be cleared up.

There are a few other things that my wife and I try to do to keep our hearts healthy and maybe these are some things you can do as well.

We eat fish maybe two times a week on average. We’ve all heard of the omega-3 fatty acids and how good they are for you. And they seem to be found in a lot more foods these days, which is a good thing. But fish like salmon is high in these fatty acids. And if you like fish, it’s a tasty way to get the vitamins you need.

Too much stress is a big no-no for heart health. We can’t rid ourselves of all stress, nor would we want to. Some stress is good for us and keeps us on our toes. But most of us probably have too much. Here’s some ways we try to keep it at bay. One, we have learned to say no to good things. If you say yes to everything, you may soon be unable to say yes to anything! Better to pace yourself for the longer haul than burn out in the short term.

Finally, find reasons to laugh. Laughing is fun and is good for your heart. Share a joke with a friend or your mate. If you are going to watch television stay off the news channels. Watch a favorite sitcom instead. And if there just isn’t anything funny at hand, just fake a laugh! You may wind up laughing harder than ever.
