It is surprising to note how often knives and other edged weapons are used in films to create a visual intimidation tactic that increases the tension of the scene. It is used almost universally in adult and children’s films as well as in regular programming and character imitations. For example, if a character were to enter a restaurant in the downtown area of a city, but the producer wanted the viewers to know that the setting is a dangerous place, the sight of a cook using a professional knife sharpener or slowly running the blades of two knives together combined with a deliberate look can have the desired effect of creating an ominous scene.
