A stylish little black dress with the right cut and the right accessories is always an eye-catcher in any occasion. Usually made of fabrics with a characteristic sheen, black casuals and formal black dresses for women will unfailingly distinguish its wearer even in a huge crowd. Since the first simple black attire created by Chanel, there have emerged many variations and styles for these dresses from which a woman may select. Normally executed in a shiny fabric like silk, satin or nylon, the dress is no longer just appropriate for afternoon and evening wear but for all occasions that require a person to appear with a dignified as well as a distinctly fashionable look.

As a matter of fact, most of the famous women in the world have worn black to some important occasion. Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana are among these persons. The legendary Audrey Hepburn has the distinction of wearing the dress which is considered the best dress ever worn on cinema. This is the classic sleeveless and tubed gown which she wore with long black gloves and which was the signature costume for the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

Black has the effect of contracting or making images smaller. When used for dresses, black can make a woman look more slender or shorted than she actually is. If the effect of the color is enhanced by a vertically oriented cut (narrowly cut with longer hemlines) it gives a woman’s figure a sleek slimness that can never fail to gain admirers for her. Designed with a shorter hemline, a black gown can make a woman look petite and sexy.

So if you happen to be on the plump side, you should consider wearing a black outfit with narrowly contoured lines. If, you are a short person, on the other hand, consider wearing a narrow and longish black attire. This will make you seem taller than you really are.

For the ultimate slimming and heightening effect, you could try getting a jeans-style dress.

On the opposite end, slim women should wear black dresses with slightly wider skirts and shorter hems to tone down their narrow dimensions. Because black can easily blend with most color settings, when you select a black dress for any occasion, the only thing you need to worry about is the way it was cut.
