Safety Concerns With Children’s Duvets
>
If you’re looking to buy children’s duvets, there are safety issues you should be aware of before you even start shopping for them. Safety concerns when shopping for a child’s duvet is much like the same concerns when you buy duvets for adults. However, there are additional concerns when the concern applied to children.
The first safety matter to consider when buying children’s duvets is to make sure that the fabrics of the duvet you’re buying include fire resistant material. This is a precaution that also applies to duvets for adults. The reason for this is that fire resistant matter is prevents flames from spreading should there ever be a fire while in bed. When shopping for a child’s duvet, check to see if it is fire resistant before leaving the store.
There should be a label sewn to the duvet indicating that it is, or there should be a slip in the package that explains that. If in doubt, check with the store to make sure that the fabric is fire resistant. The same applies to buying the duvet online. Before making a purchase, check if there is anything in the specifications page that explains whether it’s fire resistant or not. If you can’t find it, check with the customer service department.
If you’ve purchased children’s duvets that do not contain fire resistant material, either because you were unaware of the potential risk of fire or someone gave you the duvet as a gift, you can by a fire resistant solution that you can spray onto the duvet. In fact, you can apply the solution to a
duvet even if the duvet you bought has fire resistant chemicals in the fabric as it may wear off after repeated dry cleaning or washing.
The next concern which actually applies specifically to children is the child’s age. There’s no question that duvets make wonderful gifts for children. However, it is strongly recommended that duvets should not be used by children under age three. The reason for this is twofold. One, children under the age of three have been known to wrap the duvet around them and suffocate. Their bodies can also get overheated.
The other area of concern regarding child safety with duvets is that the fire resistant chemicals can cause allergies in children under the age of three. If you receive a gift for your child who is under three, be appreciative for the gift and for the thought of giving it. Children’s duvets can be stored until a child turns three. By then, a child is at the toddler stage and any risk to safety is minimal.
