Rapalas: The Ultimate Pike Lure?

>

Catching northern pike isn’t exactly an art, and it doesn’t have to be.  One of the beautiful things about choosing to go pike fishing over another form of angling is that there are few freshwater fish that are more aggressive, more fun to fish for, and easier to get to go after your lures.

So the question comes up, while high action lures are generally agreed upon by experienced anglers as being best, that is a pretty wide umbrella term.  So when the question comes up as a point of debate, it’s one that deserves a valid answer: what is the ultimate northern pike fishing lure?

There are many anglers who believe the classic rapala is as good as it gets.  There are several reasons for this.  For one, these lures mimic smaller fish, which is the majority of a pike’s diet.  So you know they’ll at least give a glance at a rapala passing by.  Another bonus to this particular type of lure is that some have rattles or even blinking lights – and pike are very territorial.  Sending a lure by that really annoys them is usually good enough to get a hit, as well.  Pike can be spiteful that way.

Another advantage of rapalas is that they can be cast from shore, or used for trolling.  Both methods have their time and place.  In addition to the normal rapalas, there are also the Magnum Rapalas, which are big enough to help ensure that only good sized pike hit you in an attempt to get a meal.  Any really good pike fishing tips guide will talk about how useful both rapalas and magnums can be used to nail down those trophy pike.

While there’s no way to declare for sure that the rapala is the ultimate pike lure, many anglers swear by this versatile little lure as a sure way to nail these predatory underwater giants.
