An aquarium filter is one of the most important components necessary to maintain an artificial fish tank. It acts to remove physical and soluble chemical wastes from the stagnant water in the fish aquarium. There are three types of filtration that is necessary for a fish tank and they are mechanical, chemical and biological filtration. Mechanical filtration removes free floating particles from the water.

Chemical filtration uses activated carbon in the filter which helps to remove any odor in the fish tank. Zeolite is also used in chemical filtration as it helps in removing high levels of ammonia in the water, thus protecting the lives of the fish. Biological filtration is very important because it deals with the growing of good bacteria in the fish tank. These bacteria help in furthering the nitrogen cycle in the water as it converts ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate.

Power filters siphon water from the bottom of the tank and after filtration allows it to flow back into the tank. It uses material like carbon, zeolite, sponge and so on in order to filter the water. However, the BIO-Wheel filter utilizes certain good bacteria in order to filter the water. The bacteria consume the waste in the water and do not cause any diseases in the fish. Undergravel filter is an old method of trapping and removing waste material in fish tanks. It forces water to move down toward the gravel at the bottom of the fish tank and traps the particles. Regular vacuuming of the gravel is required in order to prevent the formation of harmful gases.
