Does A Hair Loss Shampoo Really Work

>

You will see a lot of different ads for hair loss shampoos if you start to research the possibility of re-growing hair on your bald spot.  These products make all kinds of claims about how you can have a full head of hair again if you only use their shampoo and/or conditioner.

While scalp health is an important aspect of keeping hair growing on your head, it is not the number one concern and thus the effectiveness of these shampoos really needs to be questioned if you are going to spend fifty or a hundred dollars a month on them.  The reality is hair loss is most likely caused by a genetic condition called androgenic alopecia and if you don’t deal with this root cause then nothing you do to the scalp will help.

When a man suffers from this problem, also called male pattern baldness, his hair follicles (hair roots) are attacked by a naturally occurring hormone substance called DHT.  This DHT (dihydrotestosterone) bonds with receptors on the follicles which are predisposed to stop hair production.

The hormonal metabolite will actually cut off the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicle which is the part of the hair which manufactures keratin.  As the production of keratin slows down the hair shaft becomes thinner and thinner until it breaks off and falls out.  At this point most of the hair follicles will need to be replaced in order to get hair growing again.

If you spot the problem soon enough you can start a hair restoration treatment which will allow you to interrupt the attack on the follicles.  By applying a solution with the FDA approved drug Minoxidil to your scalp twice a day you can help protect your hair roots from DHT.  This treatment can also jump start some follicles into producing hair if they have stopped but the majority of the benefit is in keeping the hair you already have.

The Minoxidil works by bonding at the receptor sites so the DHT can’t.  This allows the nutrients to continue to flow to the hair root and thus it can keep producing keratin.  Some shampoos may contain Minoxidil but you really need to leave it on your scalp to soak in so applying shampoo and then instantly rinsing it out won’t really help much.
