Choosing Your Electric or Hand Crank Ice Cream Machine
>
For someone who loves ice cream, few things will be more enjoyable and satisfying than taking the time to make some of your own. There are many ice cream makers on the market, so before you rush out to buy one there are a few factors to consider.
Using an ice cream machine to make small amounts of ice cream at home can be lot of fun for the family. The way it works is to freeze the mixture while stirring or churning it at the same time. This will ensure that no ice crystals form and it will also aerate the ice cream to keep it smooth. Depending on the recipe and model of ice cream freezer that you own, there can be many other steps and factors to consider so make sure to follow the directions for your ice cream maker.
One of the two basic types is the manual or hand-crank ice cream machine. They are often more inexpensive although they can be a little inconvenient and make a mess at times. These models typically are made of an inner bowl and an outer bowl. The inner bowl has a hand crank that turns a paddle and stirs the ice cream mixture. In the outer bowl is a freezing mixture made of salt and ice, which will freeze the ice cream in the smaller bowl. The paddle is turned manually until the desired consistency is reached. Then, enjoy!
The other main style is the electric ice cream machine. There are three main kinds of electric machines. Each of the three, similar to the manual style, uses a bowl and paddle stirring method to mix up the ice cream. The main difference is in how the cooling is performed. There are countertop ice cream
machines that are very similar to the manual ones. There are units that are made to work inside of your freezer. Then there are larger more expensive units that have a freezing system built into them.
There are several manufacturers and units to choose from. Some of the main companies are Cuisinart, Lello, Hamilton Beach, KitchenAid and one less well known brand name – White Mountain. Many of these machines like the Cuisinart ICE-21 ice cream machine also makes sorbet and frozen yogurt.
Each of these styles of ice cream machines has their own advantages and disadvantages. However, the result of all of them is the same, ice cream! For a person who loves to have a nice cold bowl of ice cream on a hot summer day, the preparation method will probably not matter.
