Solitaire diamond engagement rings are always beautiful tokens to give to a girl on her engagement. But some girls like a little more romance, and although the solitaire is charming, it is also very “samey” and everyone seems to have some variation of this type of ring. For something a bit more unusual and exotic, why not try an antique filigree ring, something packed with romance and with a story behind it. Maybe it’s time to start hinting to the boyfriend, if you like filigree rings rather than solitaires.

One of the great features of filigree rings is their wonderful and intricate patterns and the workmanship that went into the metalwork. Often the ring will contain a central gemstone as an integral part of the design, but the incorporation of a gem is not compulsory for it to be called a filigree ring. The rings are inspired by the delicate lace-like filigree jewelry, made from fragile strands of gold and silver, and although both are very beautiful to look at, thankfully the rings are much more robust, so you don’t need to worry about them breaking.

Antique filigree rings, just like the more modern ones are broadly split into three groups, and you’ll need to decide which one suits you best, or how lavish you want to be when out shopping for one. So the first category is the simplest, and consists of a plain metal band, made of gold or silver, containing a gemstone as the centerpiece. The filigree pattern acts as a supporting role in the design, and is usually placed near the stone as an accent.

The second type to investigate is called the complex filigree ring, and this style is far more elaborate. The metalwork detailing is carved around the entire ring and although the design might still include a gemstone or several of them, it is no longer the centerpiece but rather assists in accomplishing a single balanced pattern.

Finally, there are the multi-tone filigree rings, which are crafted out of two different colored metals. They are usually white gold or platinum combined with yellow gold, and the wonderful effect is stunning, drawing your eyes into the patterns so that you can see the workmanship that went into crafting these gorgeous pieces of jewelry.

Surely no girl could resist such a romantic and beautiful engagement ring as one of these, to usher in the beginning of her journey into married life with the man of her dreams. Now, she just need to get the dress for her wedding.
